New York, NY — March 28, 2025 — The American Foundation for the University of the West Indies (AFUWI) proudly announces the distinguished honorees for its 28th Annual Scholarship Awards Gala, -“The Legacy Continues,” to be held on Friday, April 4, 2025, at 583 Park Avenue, New York City.

This prestigious event celebrates individuals and organizations whose leadership and philanthropy have significantly impacted the Caribbean, the United States, and beyond. All proceeds from the gala support scholarships for financially disadvantaged yet high-achieving students at the University of the West Indies (UWI). “This isn’t just a gala — it’s a lifeline. It’s about opening doors that would otherwise remain closed for some of the brightest minds in the Caribbean,” said Ann Marie Grant, Executive Director of AFUWI. “I’ve seen firsthand how a single scholarship can transform a life, a family, and a community. We’re not just raising funds — we’re building futures, and every supporter becomes part of that legacy.”

Trailblazer Award – Senator the Hon. Audrey Marks

Newly appointed Senator and Minister of Efficiency, Innovation, and Digital Transformation in the Jamaican government, Senator Marks is recognized for her groundbreaking leadership in diplomacy, business, and education. As the founder of Paymaster Jamaica, she pioneered and transformed the Caribbean region’s internet-based financial payment services. She is the first female ambassador from Jamaica to the USA and the first female president of the Jamaica America Chamber of Commerce in Jamaica. She continues to advocate for economic empowerment and educational access.

Chancellor’s Award – William Mahfood

Chairman of WISYNCO Group, Mahfood is recognized for excellence in global business leadership and philanthropy. Under his direction, WISYNCO has become a regional industry leader and had the most extensive listing on the Jamaica Stock Exchange. The company will also receive the AFUWI Corporate Award for its outstanding commitment to corporate responsibility, setting industry standards for others to emulate.

Pelican Award – Cedric Gayle, Esq.

A proud UWI alumnus and founding member of its New York alumni chapter, Mr. Gayle is celebrated for his distinguished legal career and dedication to community service.

Vice Chancellor’s Achievement Award – Althea Brown

As the Managing Director, Chief Legal Officer, and Corporate Secretary of LPL Financial, Brown is renowned for her legal expertise, leadership in financial services, and contributions to community development. LPL Financial, which manages nearly one trillion dollars in assets,  is the largest independent broker-dealer in the United States.

Salute to Caribbean Gold Award – Thea LaFond Gadson

Dominican Olympic gold medalist LaFond Gadson, who won the women’s triple jump at the 2024 Paris Games, is honored for her extraordinary achievement and for inspiring pride across the Caribbean. Her win marked the island’s first Olympic medal in history.

Pinnacle Award – Half Moon Hotel

This iconic Montego Bay destination is recognized for excellence in global hospitality and community service, including support for Cornwall Regional Hospital, SOS Children’s Village, and scholarships for underserved youth.

Given the interdependence and invaluable relationship between the USA and the Caribbean region,  AFUWI  Board Chairman Dr. Cyrus McCalla expressed immense appreciation to all the
