Immigrating to the United States is a difficult task that raises many questions for immigrants who want to ensure their rights to stay in this country. If you’ve ever researched the legality of immigrating to the U.S. from any country, you may have asked yourself these questions: What is Unlawful Presence? What are the terms, With Inspection and Without Inspection? What are immediate relative petitions? Can a faith-based organization petition for me? How do I bring my family legally to the United States? What should I do if I am arrested? What is SIJ? Can I do an orphan petition? Fortunately, these questions can be answered by The Immigrant’s Journal & Legal Educational Fund Inc. (IJLEF).

IJLEF, in collaboration with Figeroux & Associates, founded by Brian Figeroux, Esq., conducts monthly meetings relating to information immigrants should know regarding their rights in this country. Their goal is to inform and assist immigrants and people of color with their rights when confronted by authorities, what to say, and how to carefully calculate their next steps. The IJLEF mainly discusses current events in politics and reports on changes that could either benefit or harm immigrants of color, such as the proposed Public Charge Rule.

In the next IJLEF meeting, members will discuss the Trump administration’s proposed Public Charge Rule. A rule that, if passed, immigrants who legally use public benefits could be denied Green Cards. According to the Immigrant Legal Resource Center, “under the proposed rule, past and current use of Medicaid, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as Food Stamps), Section 8 housing assistance, and the Low-Income Subsidy for the Medicare Part D prescription drug benefit can be used as evidence that a green card or visa applicant is inadmissible under the public charge ground.”

The IJLEF acts to empower immigrants and protect them against proposals such as the Public Charge Rule and encourages them to join the IJLEF community. By joining, members will have access to many free citizenship assistance programs: assistance with W7 Forms for Tax ID, G28, access to a free Paralegal Certificate Program, Wills preparation for members and spouses, legal consultations on any legal matter, and business training with the New American Chamber of Commerce. These benefits will supply immigrants with the information and training needed to protect themselves, their families, and others against serious legal problems.
