Pleading for the Widows

By Charmaine Moses

One of the first Ministries that developed in the early Church apart from Worship, Prayer, Evangelism and Study of doctrine was the Ministry to Widows.  Acts 6:1. This early Church picked up the Ministry to the Widows because of the expression of the love of God. No one designed it, it just became an important Ministry of the Church.  This was the Church’s first spontaneous Ministry.

The instruction was 7 honest Christians, mature, full of love and concern.  Acts 9:36 Dorcas was raised from the dead by Peter to resume her most important work to the Widows. Notice verse 39 she used her resources to supply Widows.  She had a heart of compassion towards widows in her day.

All throughout the Bible, the Holy Spirit expresses the heart of God for the Widows and Orphans.  They are under the very special care and concern of our Heavenly Father.

As the Widows likewise the Orphans.  Let me explain. While her husband lives, he speaks for her – he is her provider, protector and preserver likewise the Orphan. While the parents live, they too are the provider, protector and preserver.  Now in the absence of the husband and the parents, God steps in – how? Through people like you who are reading this article. The Holy Spirit impresses the heart of Churches to host Ministry to Widows and Orphans because of their love for the expression of God’s heart.

Exodus 22:22-23 “ye shall not wrong nor afflict any widow or fatherless child. If you afflict them in any way, and they cry at all to me, I will surely hear their cry.” The God who marks the sparrow’s fall will bring due recompense upon the oppressor of the widow and the fatherless. Have you ever heard the cry of a Widow or an Orphan when enough is enough? Trust me you don’t want to hear it. But through this Pleading for the Widows Ministry we want to be the expression of the heart of God in your Churches at home and abroad, but we can’t do it without you.
