Prime Minister Allen Chastanet has condemned the assassination of Haiti’s President Jovenel Moïse in an early Wednesday morning attack by gunmen.

Moïse’s wife was injured in the attack which took place at the couple’s home.

Haiti’s interim prime minister, Claude Joseph, confirmed the death of the Haitian leader and said the police and military were in control of security.

Authorities in the country have declared a ‘state of siege’, according to the Associated Press, which reported that the international airport is closed.

Haiti has been plagued by gang violence, skyrocketing inflation and protests.

“On behalf of the Government and People of Saint Lucia, I convey our deepest sympathies to Haiti. We condemn the heinous assassination of President Jovenel Möise and all acts of violence,” Prime Minister Allen Chastanet wrote on his official Facebook page.

“We pray for stability and peace as the Region mourns his passing,” Chastanet stated.

Moïse, 53, had been ruling by decree for more than a year after the country failed to hold elections.

But the opposition had been clamouring for him to quit, saying he was leading Haiti toward yet another grim period of authoritarianism, the Associated Press said.

The news organisation quoted the interim prime minister as saying that the gunmen who killed Moïse spoke Spanish or English and were highly trained and heavily armed.

But he gave no details on how the attack unfolded, who carried it out or why, or whether anyone was arrested.
