PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD & TOBAGO: January 7, 2025: In a historic move within the ruling People’s National Movement (PNM), Stuart Young has been appointed as the new Prime Minister of Trinidad & Tobago by outgoing leader, Dr. Keith Rowley. The announcement came after a closely contested vote within the party, with Young emerging victorious in an internal election, where he secured 11 votes against his rival, Pennelope Beckles-Robinson, who garnered 9.
The leadership contest unfolded amidst growing speculation over Rowley’s successor, as the political landscape of the nation prepares for a new chapter. After weeks of deliberation, Dr. Rowley formally put the decision to the PNM’s internal structures. In a statement released shortly after the vote, Rowley expressed his full support for Young, signaling a smooth transition of power within the party.
“I am proud to stand behind Stuart Young as the next Prime Minister of Trinidad & Tobago,” Dr. Rowley said in his address. “The PNM has always been a party of progress, and with Stuart’s leadership, we are confident that this nation will continue to thrive.”
Young, who has served as the Minister of National Security and Minister of Energy, spoke to the media following his appointment, acknowledging the responsibility entrusted to him and expressing his commitment to furthering the nation’s development.
“I am deeply humbled by the trust and confidence my colleagues have placed in me,” Young said. “This is a monumental moment, not only for me personally but for the future of Trinidad & Tobago. I pledge to serve all citizens of this country, to continue the work that has been started, and to ensure that our nation remains secure, prosperous, and united.”
The leadership vote was a hard-fought contest, as Beckles-Robinson, a senior party member and former Minister of Foreign and Caricom Affairs, was considered a strong contender. Despite her defeat, Beckles-Robinson delivered a gracious message to Young and to the party, emphasizing unity and continued collaboration.
“I congratulate Stuart on his victory, and I am committed to supporting him and the PNM in the days ahead,” Beckles-Robinson stated. “The work of building a better Trinidad & Tobago transcends individual ambitions, and I will continue to serve the people with dedication.”
Political analysts are already commenting on the implications of the leadership change. According to political expert Dr. Wayne Kublalsingh, Young’s victory marks a significant shift in the party’s direction. “Stuart Young brings a wealth of experience in both security and energy, two critical sectors for the country’s future. His leadership could usher in a new era of innovation and economic stability for Trinidad & Tobago.”
As Prime Minister-designate, Young faces an array of challenges, including economic diversification, crime reduction, and navigating Trinidad & Tobago’s role on the regional and global stage. Despite these challenges, he remains optimistic about the future.
“I believe in the resilience of our people, and together, we will build a stronger and brighter future for this country,” Young concluded.
The new Prime Minister is expected to be formally sworn in within the coming days, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the nation’s political history.
This is a developing story. Stay tuned for updates!
