Three Soldiers Die in Explosion at Army Base in Guyana

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Thursday April 30, 2020 – Three members of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) was killed and two others injured in an explosion at army base this morning.

The circumstances of the explosion that occurred around 9 a.m. at the Arms Store Complex at Camp Stephenson in Timehri, East Bank Demerara, are under investigation by a Board of Inquiry.

But the GDF said preliminary investigations have so far revealed that the soldiers were involved in the preparation of pyrotechnics for demolition when the incident occurred.

Dead are: Lance Corporal Kevon Nicholson, 23; Lance Corporal Tooney Peneux, 28; and Private Shaqueel Deheart, 20.

The injured members of the GDF are: Sergeant Quincy Threlfall, 43; and Lance Corporal Paul Peters, 29. Threlfall is currently receiving medical care at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation while Peters was treated at Camp Stephenson.

In a statement issued this afternoon, President David Granger expressed his heartfelt sympathy to the relatives and friends of the deceased soldiers and wished the injured soldiers a speedy recovery.

In February this year, a soldier lost his life and several others were injured in a fireworks explosion while preparing to celebrate Guyana’s Jubilee Republic anniversary.
