(New York, NY) — New York City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer released an updated 2019 LGBTQ+ Guide to Services and Resources – the most comprehensive directory of LGBTQ+ organizations and programs in New York City. This year’s guide is dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising and coincides with the City hosting WorldPride for the first time in the United States. For many LGBTQ+ New Yorkers, connecting to LGBTQ-affirming organizations and services geared towards their needs can be a challenge. The Comptroller’s guide, which is also available online, includes information on more than 100 community groups offering LGBTQ-led and -centered services, from health care and counseling to arts and social networks.
“This June is a poignant moment in the history of New York City. Fifty years ago this month, brave LGBTQ+ New Yorkers fought back against homophobia, institutional violence, and oppression at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village,” said New York City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer. “This year’s LGBTQ+ Guide is a tribute to all those who fought to put our city at the forefront of the modern LGBTQ rights movement. We must never forget that Pride Month is not only a celebration of love and equality, but also an opportunity to recommit ourselves to the fight for social justice. In order to properly honor the legacy of Stonewall, we must ensure the City serves the needs of all LGBTQ+ New Yorkers, particularly people of color and those struggling to make ends meet. This comprehensive directory of LGBTQ+ resources and services will help New Yorkers better understand the many opportunities available to help them to connect and enjoy the five boroughs.”
The Comptroller’s report includes a number of assistance tools for LGBTQ+ New Yorkers, including how to report acts of discrimination, receive cash assistance, learn about the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), emergency housing, and more.
Comptroller Stringer’s LGBTQ+ guide is released annually during Pride Month. The Comptroller’s office has worked to advance equality for LGBTQ+ New Yorkers by mobilizing other pension funds  to speak out against discrimination; ensuring corporate diversity efforts explicitly include the LGBTQ+ community; spearheading an effort with City and State elected officials to introduce legislation to expand anti-discrimination protections to LGBTQ+ business owners in New York that bid on city and state contracts, and explicitly defining board diversity to include the LGBTQ+ community in corporate governance policies.
