Caribbean’s Experiment Using Renewable Hydrogen to Refuel Ships

Companies in France and the Caribbean are seeking innovative solutions that will transform the region’s maritime industry.

The companies, PONANT and startup FARWIND Energy have defined a road map to develop production and use of renewable marine hydrogen.

The plan is to produce electricity at sea from offshore wind and transform it into hydrogen by the electrolysis of seawater.

The hydrogen can be transported to shore to be used as a fuel, a solution particularly well suited to island territories, or refueling of a ship can take place at sea, helping accelerate the maritime transport industry’s energy transition.

The two partners have set themselves a goal to be in a position to commission the first energy ship by 2030.
