Termination Benefits for Majestic Industries and LIAT 1974 Ltd Settled

Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre has announced in Parliament the settlement of termination benefits to workers of garment manufacturer Majestic Industries and LIAT 1974 Ltd. In 2004, after 25 years in business, Majestic Industries ended operations in St. Lucia. But it did not settle termination benefits for over 300 workers. Most were women. The government of Saint Lucia has now taken a decision to compensate those workers. In 2020, after 40 years of service, LIAT the Caribbean airline, went into liquidation. Hundreds lost their jobs and were not adequately compensated; the majority were non-management LIAT employees. Prime Minister Pierre told Parliamentarians that government was currently in discussion with former management staff and pilots to arrive at an acceptable settlement. The proposed compensation package for workers of both Majestic Industries and LIAT 1974 Ltd is placed at over $6.3 million. The Prime Minister has directed the Department of Finance to facilitate the outstanding payments by the issuance of government bonds. Mr. Pierre gave the assurance that the outstanding payments would be settled before year end.
