St. Lucia Explores Full Potential of Mango in Food Security Thrust

The Ministry of Agriculture and the Taiwan Technical Mission have staged an extensive exhibition showcasing the potential of mangoes.

Close to 30 exhibitors comprising mainly agro-processors took the opportunity to demonstrate the versatility of mangoes whether in its green, ripe, or dried stages.

Mangomania, as the event was dubbed was held under the theme “Tout Bagay Mango”, translated, ‘everything mango’.

One of the highlights of the festival was the release of a recipe book featuring the creativity of chefs from local restaurants, hotels, and students of the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College. The book contains 36 recipes – covering main courses, appetizers, beverages, and desserts including mango cheesecakes.

Agriculture Minister Alfred Prospere noted that that his Ministry’s support of the mango festival was in keeping with the broader goal of national food security and the reduction in the food import bill.

More attention will be placed on processing and storage of mango during the surpluses of the mango season and there will be support for marketing, research, and farmers markets around the island.

An attempt is also being made to preserve raw varieties which are in danger of being lost.

Mangomania was initiated and financed by the Taiwan Technical Mission.
